Attorney, Domestic Violence Legal Services

Job Overview

Our Prototypes Domestic Violence program is seeking a Temporary (6 months) to Permanent Attorney to provide legal representation, advice, advocacy and education to victims of domestic violence seeking services at our DV resource centers. Must have a current license to practice law in California and experience and knowledge of family law, domestic violence, and immigration law. Part-time or fulltime.

Key Responsibilities

Program Implementation: 

  • Responsible for properly opening all legal files in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Maintain written records and reports documenting client services and submit timely monthly billing reports.
  • Utilize data collection forms, materials, and reports mandated under contract.
  • Properly close all files with appropriate referrals in accordance with applicable statues, codes, and local rules.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with DPSS statement of work and program requirements for legal services.
  • Participate in ongoing training to improve the program or services.

Legal Services:

  • Responsible for providing a professional standard of legal services and fully utilize the contract.
  • Conduct intake and determine eligibility for legal services under DPSS contract.
  • Render legal advice in the areas of Family Law, Domestic Violence/Injunctions, Citizenship/Immigration Law, Accessing Government Benefits and other legal assistance.
  • Provide appropriate legal referrals as assessed and as needed.
  • Handle all aspects of legal matters in Family Law cases, including preparing pleadings, negotiations, correspondence, mediation, and court representation. 
  • Attend alternative dispute resolution or mediations set by the parties or the court.
  • Prepare U-Visas and VAWA petitions for qualified participants.
  • Advocate for clients with the Department of Children and Family Services cases.
  • Implement law-related educational programs and workshops for participants.
  • Develop additional workshops on poverty and family law topics for participants. 

Customer Service:

  • Provide high quality, trauma informed services with people who have survived DV.
  • Develop and document culturally competent services that are sensitive to the target population.
  • Provide integrated domestic violence legal services within a spectrum of behavioral health services. Collaborate with co-workers to meet program goals.
  • Represent the Legal Services program at relevant County and local community meetings, trainings, conferences, and community outreach events.
  • Maintain a network of legal services resources and collaborative partners.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Juris Doctorate, with current license to practice law in the State of California
  • Minimum of two years' experience practicing family law 
  • Must have prior legal experience
  • Prior experience working with domestic violence victims is strongly preferred
  • Must have well-developed communication skills-written and oral advocacy with ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff, community organizations, government agencies, attorneys, and the public 
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting and under pressure 
  • Dependable automobile with insurance, registration, and valid California drivers license 
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Knowledge and respect of all confidentiality issues
